How to Write a Great Book

I was watching a youtube video by author Chris Fox, where he talks about how to use Dan Harmon’s story circle to write a great book. This circle is a simplified version of Vogler’s Hero’s Journey, and I wanted to hear more.

I’ve been hearing about the book “The Writer’s Journey” by Christopher Vogler in one way or another for many years now. I bought the 2007 paperback edition from Amazon a while back, and it’s languished on my bookshelf until that youtube video inspired me to read it.

I’m so glad I finally got around to reading this book. I’m not entirely done – it’s 406 pages of densely informative text – but I have learned SO MUCH! I recognize Vogler’s ideas from so many different sources. This book has the in-depth examination of all the pieces of a great story that I’ve wanted. His diagrams alone are fantastic references for both plot and character arc development. I feel so inspired and have started to re-write my main’s character arc according to Vogler’s work. If you’re looking for an in-depth explanation of the story and character elements required for a great book, I highly recommend The Writer’s Journey by Christopher Vogler.

Even if you don’t follow this format for your own story, you’ll know what the “rules” are so you can break them with purpose and intent!

Happy writing!
